Studio Wrestling:

A Guide to TV Studios that were home for Wrestling

in the Mid-Atlantic Area

A Gateway Special Presentation by Dick Bourne

Personally, I have never enjoyed wrestling on television quite as much since Jim Crockett quit taping the shows in the television studio. There was something magic about studio wrestling, the closeness, the warmth, the familiarity.  Most fans of the old Mid-Atlantic Wrestling territory remember the shows taped for nearly two decades at WRAL studios in Raleigh, and the final two years taped at the ridiculously small WPCQ studios in Charlotte. What many may not remember are the other studio locations in the 50s and 60s where Crockett Promotions taped wrestling matches to promote their local events. Places like High Point NC, Roanoke VA, and Greenville SC.

This section on our site is for all the fans who share the love and the special memories of Mid-Atlantic Wrestling in the TV studio. We hope these pages bring back some special memories for you, and hope as well they will serve to introduce others to those wonderful days gone by.

THE JCP NETWORK - 1973

The table at left, originally published in an issue of Mid-Atlantic Wrestling Magazine from 1973, shows the television network affiliates for Jim Crockett Promotions in that year. During this time, WBTV-3 and WGHP-8 had their own programming, while the other stations along this network carried Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling taped at WRAL in Raleigh.

* The chart you see here is scanned from the magazine. There is a typo - the station in Charleston SC is actually WCSC channel 5. Thanks to Marcus Polk for pointing that out to us.
