Bill
Janosik once photographed wrestling on a free-lance
basis for the major news-stand magazines during the
period 1974-1978. His work was shot mostly in the
arenas around the Richmond area, including the old
Richmond Arena, Richmond Coliseum, and the Hampton Coliseum.
Through his friendship with veteran journeyman
wrestler Bill White, who hooked him up with Bill Apter,
Janosik gained access to the backstage areas and
dressing rooms of these great venues, not to mention
ringside access to some of the greatest matches held
in the Mid-Atlantic area.
Bill
has been kind enough to share some of his work with
the Mid-Atlantic Gateway. We look forward to
presenting his work to you on an ongoing basis in this
photo album.

Richmond
Wrestling Expert David Chappell on Weaver vs. Super D
-
Great
shots that appear to be from the Richmond Arena. If I
had to put a year next to these pictures, it would be
late 1973.
Weaver left the area in late 1974 and didn't come back
until after the Super Destroyer had left MACW on
August 1, 1975. The last match the Super D. and Weaver
had in Richmond was at a rare Richmond Coliseum
holiday show on December 28, 1973. After that in
Richmond, the Super D. got into his feud with Swede
Hanson and Weaver started slipping down on cards
before he left the area at the end of the year. Weaver
and the Super D. did continue wrestling in some other
MACW cities into the very early part of 1974, so if
the shots were taken in Norfolk/Hampton it could have
conceivably been 1974.

It
was one of the longest running feuds in wrestling, and
it had it's start in 1975 in the Mid-Atlantic area. It
was voted Feud of the Year for 1976 by visitors to the
Mid-Atlantic Gateway website. We are proud to add five
new photographs from Bill Janosik featuring shots from
a Richmond Arena battle for the Mid-Atlantic
Championship between Wahoo McDaniel and Ric Flair.
