Another indication of what a huge event this was for Jim Crockett
Promotions was the manner in which the event was recorded for
television. The use of 16mm film footage of big matches later shown on TV was quite
common during those years. But that usually involved a single camera and
no commentary. Not for this tournament.
Jim Crockett had the whole thing taped
with Wide World Wrestling (and former long time Atlanta TV host)
Ed Capral calling the matches, with various color commentators
including David Crockett and Danny Miller.
The links and play buttons below will allow you
play audio files of the broadcast call of three of the
tournament matches in the Yahoo Media Player. We are fortunate to have this audio, taped 30
years ago by Leslie Smith Johnson with a portable handheld cassette
tape recorder, long before the advent of video tape recorders.
Leslie passed away several years ago, but her brother Kent Smith was
thoughtful enough to pass along these tapes to Leslie's friend Peggy
Lathan. Peggy and Kent decided the Mid-Atlantic Gateway was the best
place for these to be archived. We treasure these recordings and are
proud to present them here.
