This photograph of the Model City
Motel (at left) and the Garden Basket in 1957 was taken
by David Peirce and donated to the Archives of the City of Kingsport
at the Kingsport Public Library by David's son, Stanley Peirce. It
is the only photograph of the Garden Basket I've ever been able to
locate.
The Garden Basket was originally a
fruit and vegetable stand, but had become a full fledged convenience
store by the early 1970s.
One of the owners of both businesses
was James McAninch, who was either the father or uncle of a high
school classmate and football teammate of mine, Brian McAninch, at
Dobyns-Bennett High School in the late 1970s. Brian briefly wrestled
professionally after graduation for a few local "outlaw" groups, and
even had a shot or two working as enhancement talent for the Poffo's
International Championship Wrestling (ICW) in the late 1970s.
Brian was one of the folks at the
Garden Basket who would save the events posters for me to come by
and pick up later. These were the Jim Crockett Promotions wrestling
events sponsored by the local American Legion. I also bought many of
my wrestling magazines there as a kid (as well as at the venerable
Wallace News stand in downtown Kingsport.)
The Garden Basket was located at 3109
Memorial Blvd. in Kingsport TN. I was delighted to find this
photograph on the internet. The location of this photograph on the
Web is
here.
