"Hello
everybody,
this is Billy Powell...."
Those
familiar words greeted Greenville, South Carolina wrestling
fans every Saturday afternoon for years on WFBC-TV channel 4.
In addition to the local match promos taped at the WRAL
studios in Raleigh (conducted by Les Thatcher, Ed Capral,
Rich Landrum, and others), the Greenville office inserted
their own promos as well. Each featured the still image of two
grapplers with the word "Wrestling" simply printed
underneath. And then the smooth, warm voice of Billy Powell
invited us down to the
Greenville Memorial Auditorium on
Monday Night for the excitement of Mid-Atlantic Championship
Wrestling.
Paul Winkhaus called Billy "the golden voice of channel 4." He
was an institution in Greenville. And he is fondly remembered
by the Mid-Atlantic Gateway.
