What a special treat for Mid-Atlantic Wrestling fans who attended this year's Weaver Cup tournament finals. Johnny Weaver was joined by his old World Wide Wrestling sidekick Rich Landrum, as well as surprise guests Sandy Scott and Boris Zhukov, better know to us old Mid-Atlantic fans as Pvt. Jim Nelson. Combine those names with Don and Rocky Kernodle, who wrestled on the show that night, and it was hard to not flashback to 1982. It was that year that Sgt. Slaughter first took Jim Nelson as one of his marine "recruits" followed shortly by veteran Don Kernodle. The two became Pvt. Nelson and Pvt. Kernodle and together held the Mid-Atlantic Tag Team Championships. Kernodle then went on that same year to join Slaughter to win the NWA World Tag Team Championships and had a memorable feud with Ricky Steamboat and Jay Youngblood. Rocky Kernodle, know then to Mid-Atlantic fans as Keith Larson, was just getting his career underway at that point as well.
Sandy Scott, who held many tag team championships in the 60s and early 70s with his brother George Scott as well as Nelson Royal, was working in the front office of Jim Crockett Promotions in 1982. Sandy was also co-host of Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling with the venerable Bob Caudle for most of that year. Johnny Weaver was still wrestling in 1982, finishing up a long and illustrious ring career. He was also co-host of World Wide Wrestling during those years. Rich Landrum was host of that show from 1978-1983, and Weaver was his co-host for most of that time. Weaver is remembered fondly for singing "Turn Out the Lights, the Party's Over" at the end of at least one match almost every week on World Wide, a tip of the hat to Don Meredith who was famous for doing the same thing on Monday Night Football in the late 1970s. The big surprise of the night, however, was when Rich Landrum came out to open the CWF Mid-Atlantic show this night, much as he had done 25 years ago at the studios of WRAL in Raleigh. Rich then introduced his co-host Johnny Weaver, and those there said for a brief moment, in this little building that very much reminds you of the old TV studios to begin with, it was like watching World Wide Wrestling in 1982 again. "Turn out the lights, the party's over, they say that all good things must end. Call it a night, the party's over. And tomorrow brings the same old thing again." - Dick Bourne Mid-Atlantic Gateway August 2007
